IAE Scientists Funded by 2018 National Key Technology R&D Program
The Ministry of Science and Technology recently announced the review results of the Key Special Project Applications for the 2018 National Key Technology Research and Development (R&D) Program - The Causes and Treatment Technologies for On-site Soil Pollution. Two project proposals submitted by scientists of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), the Chinese Academy of Sciences were successfully approved to start: “Integrated green technology and intelligent equipment for cleaning and desorbing high-concentration oil contaminated soil” and "Methods and standards for assessing on-site soil environmental damage”. It shows the great progress IAE has made toward having more voice in the fields of pollution ecology and environmental engineering in China. Both projects are of great significance for resolving China’s major environmental problems (e.g. soil pollution).
The two projects approved are as follows:
Integrated green technology and intelligent equipment for cleaning and desorbing high-concentration oil contaminated soil (PI: GUO Shuhai)
This project is mainly aimed at the bottle-neck of high-concentration crude oil-contaminated soil remediation technology and devoted to conduct the following theoretical and technical researches: clarify the temporal and spatial distribution of oil pollution in the oilfields of China by performing oil chemical and soil geographic analyses; put forward the R&D idea of “Desorption separation-Resource recovery” by understanding the oil-soil interaction and its scientific mechanism; synthesize environmentally friendly anionic, non-ionic and anionic-non-ionic cleaning agents by studying charge characteristics of the soil; develop two-stage cleaning process according to the form of oil in the soil and the curve relationship between the amount of oil and the soil particle size; develop rapid and high-efficient elution technology and equipment; propose a cleaning-thermal desorption coupling treatment process based on the heat characteristics of oil on coarse and fine particles of soil; establish a green and efficient integrated technology and develop modular and intelligent equipment sets; carry out engineering demonstration, form technical standards; build a high-concentration soil-contaminated soil remediation technology system, and realize the safe utilization of oil-contaminated soil in China.
Methods and Standards for Assessing On-site Soil Environmental Damage (PI: ZHU Jinghai)
According to the ideas and procedure of “Feature identification - Environmental behavior - Damage investigation - Technical standards”, the researchers use molecular biology, genomics, isotope, remote sensing, in situ monitoring, biochip, multiphase tracing and other technologies in order to clarify the mechanisms and quantitatively simulate the complex relationships at typical contaminated sites, identify early exposure biomarkers and effect biomarkers, and build risk diagnostic procedures. By conducting manipulation studies and in-situ experiments, the researchers will develop a high-performance mathematical model, integrate various process mechanisms and parameter indices, and establish a multi-scale, multi-layer on-site pollution damage assessment system for various pollution types.
