1 Ecological Risk Assessment of Emerging Environmental Pollutants
The history of science has shown that the discovery of new environmental pollutants has stimulated a new wave of research over the next decade. In recent years pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), as well as ion solvents and antibiotics, have caused wide public concern. Systematic and intensive study of the movement, transformation and impacts on ecosystems of these emerging environmental pollutants is urgently required.
2 Food Safety Assessment Based on Aggregation Model
Food safety is a national issue affecting individual livelihoods, and thus a serious challenge facing government and researchers. We will focus research on the adsorption, discharge and accumulation of pollutants (heavy metals and persistent organic chemicals) by crops in northeast China; northern cold-water fishes and economically-important marine species in the Bohai Gulf area; and application of aggregated models for pollution control and to provide a scientific basis for food safety of agricultural products.
3 Processes Contributing to Pollutant Toxicity
Taking into account emerging theories and analytical techniques derived from genomics, proteomics and metabolomics, we will conduct research on the impacts of pollutants on DNA sequence and genomic expression of target organisms at the genetic and molecular levels. We will also study the multivariate dynamic responses of organisms exposed to multiple pollutants in order to clarify the in vivo toxification and detoxification mechanisms of pollutants and establish a more physiologically significant and sensitive system of toxicity indicators.
