Research Facilities and International Collaboration

The Center for Agricultural and Soil Ecology is a major component of the State Key Laboratory of Forest and Soil Ecology. The Center also contains the National Laboratory of Soil Nutrient Management and Engineering; the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory for Soil Environmental Quality and Agricultural Product Safety; the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory for Water-Saving Agriculture; the Liaoning Provincial Center for Fertilizer Engineering Research; the Shenyang City Center for Agricultural Product Safety Services; and the Shenyang Agro-Ecosystem Research Station.

The State Key Laboratory of Forest and Soil Ecology focuses on research related to soil biodiversity and ecosystem functions, biogeochemical cycles of elements, and elemental interactions.

Main research topics of the National Laboratory of Soil Nutrient Management and Engineering include: prevention and acclimation of soil degradation; enhancement of soil fertility and use of organic materials; precise and efficient use of soil nutrients; and development of new fertilizers.

The Shenyang Agro-Ecosystem Research Station was established in 1987, joined the CERN network in 1992, and formally joined the National Field Observation Network in 2005. Ongoing research at the station includes: improvement in the structure and functions of agro-ecosystems; sustainable development of agriculture; efficient use of soil resources; management of nutrient and hydrological cycling in agro-ecosystems; and development of new techniques for improving nutrient and water use efficiencies.

The Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory for Soil Environmental Quality and Agricultural Product Safety conducts research related to regional planning of arable land; monitoring of soil quality and the quality of agricultural products; changes in soil quality under intensive agricultural production; advanced safe production techniques; and extension of agricultural technologies.

The Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory for Water-Saving Agriculture focuses primarily on major research issues in the arid- and semi-arid areas of Western Liaoning province.  These issues include water conservation tillage; improved water-saving agricultural techniques; maximization of synchronic efficient fertilizer and water uses; and development of water-saving soil amendments.

The Liaoning Provincial Center for Fertilizer Engineering Research, as the national leader for research in developing high-efficiency fertilizers, conducts research on the development of new nitrification and urease inhibitors; the development of biological fertilizers; and conducts field trials and demonstrations of slow-release fertilizers across all regions of China.

The Shenyang City Center for Agricultural Product Safety Services focuses on research related to the efficient use of agro-chemicals in the areas surrounding Shenyang City; the proper use and treatment of agricultural by-products; and integrative techniques and procedures for safe agricultural production.
