In 2011, in compliance with the “Innovation 2020” strategy of CAS, the Institute organized several meetings involving department heads and PI’s to discuss the Institute’s next 10-year plan. This important plan takes full account of the scientific frontier and national needs, and considers the suggestions made by members of the Science Advisory Committee of the Institute. The strategic plan was made in accordance with directives from the Chinese Academy of Sciences to include an Overall Mission, Three Breakthrough Areas, and Five New Nurturing Directions.
The Institute shall carry out basic, strategic, and frontier research in forest ecology and forest engineering, soil ecology and agricultural engineering, pollution ecology and environmental engineering, aimed at meeting the ever-increasing needs of the state in the fields of agricultural and forest sustainable development. The Institute shall develop new theories in forest ecology, agro-ecology, and pollution ecology so as to provide practical techniques for ecological restoration, environmental improvement, and food security in China.
In the next five to ten years, the Institute shall maintain our leadership in new environmentally-sound fertilizers, plantation forest research and pollution control in the plant-soil system. We strive to bring our basic research in forest and soil ecology into the international frontier, and to build an important research base for young talent and distinguished senior scientists. Our final goal is to have a globalized research institute that is first-class in China, and is highly competitive and influential with our international counterparts.
