Scientific Research Priorities

The Institute believes that global change biology and biodiversity conservation are international priorities for research, and recognizes that a vibrant and sustainable ecological environment and food security are national needs to which our Institute can make contributions. To achieve these goals, the State Key Laboratory of Forest and Soil Ecology, the National Laboratory of Fertilizer Management and Engineering, and the Key Laboratory of Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering of CAS should enhance their role as important supporting platforms to for scientific research. The Institute will allocate resources to support research projects in forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, resource use efficiency of plants, environmental remediation, and landscape ecology and regional sustainable development.

We will place substantial emphasis on the structure and function of forest ecosystems, as well as forest biodiversity and ecosystem functions. To support program implementations, the Institute will invest more resources in the State Key Laboratory of Forest and Soil Ecology, the Changbai Mountain Forest Ecosystem Research Station, and the Huitong Forest Ecosystem Research Station.

Sustainable development of agriculture in Northeast China is another focal area for the Institute. The State Key Laboratory of Fertilizer Management and Engineering and the Shenyang Agricultural Ecosystem Research Station will be the important research bases to attain these goals. Programs in biogeochemical cycles of carbon and nitrogen, ecological stoichiometry, below-ground ecology and soil biota will be strengthened. Development of new fertilizers and biological pesticides will be effective means of ensuring food security and environmental safety.

The third major research focus  includes processes of pollution ecology and environmental toxicological effects, pollution control techniques for soil and water, regional environmental carrying capacity assessment, and environmental management with support from the Key Laboratory of Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering of CAS.
