The use of complex physical, chemical and biological processes in the soil-plant system to remove organic pollutants and inorganic nutrients was developed by scientists of the Institute, and our approach has been applied in many parts of Liaoning Province to clean polluted sewage water and recycle treated water as an important renewable resource without polluting the treatment sites.
This sewage treatment technique includes several modules: land classification system, suitability assessment, land treatment types and application site evaluation, technical parameters, treatment processes procedures, and an expert system of process designs. We also developed techniques to avoid secondary pollution of soil and ground water accompanying the disposal of sewage, utilizing wetlands to filter the pollutants.
The cost of this method for sewage water treatment was only 1/2 to 1/3 that of conventional methods. This was the first method developed in China to combine industrial treatment with natural purification of sewage water. This project received the national Second-Class Award for Science Advancement.
