The IAE’s 70th anniversary not only honored its past achievements but also laid a foundation for future advancements in ecological research, reinforcing its role in sustainable development.

The 4th International Conference on Anaerobic Biological Dehalogenation (DehaloCon IV) and the Halogenated Organic Compound Pollution Remediation Symposium were held from September 26-28, 2024. Jointly organized by the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Sun Yat-sen University, the conference was chaired by Researcher YAN Jun and Professor WANG Shanquan.

Professor Elizabeth A. Edwards, a distinguished member of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, visited the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from September 22 to 23, 2024. Invited by Dr. YAN Jun, Professor Edwards’ visit aimed to enhance the research capabilities of young scientists at IAE through international collaboration and to advance the application of environmental microbial remediation technologies.

The conference highlighted Chinas growing influence in global agricultural science and its commitment to sustainable development.

A group of distinguished academicians, inlcuding ZHANG Shougong and LIU Shirong, from the Chinese Academy of Forestry and the Chinese Academy of Engineering conducted an extensive survey of the Northeast Forests in the Changbai Mountains.

In line with Chinas comprehensive green transition strategy, the Soils Nutrient and Water Efficient Utilization and Green Fertilizer Innovation Team at the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Utilizing hundreds of sensors from the “Ker Towers”, the station continuously captures comprehensive 3D structural data, flux data, and hydrological data of the forest. Through high-frequency data collection, the station measures and calculates forest productivity and carbon sequestration, studying the forest’s response to environmental variation. This helps in better understanding the operational mechanisms of forest ecosystems.

In his concluding remarks, LI stressed the need for a strategic approach to nurturing emerging disciplines and offered recommendations for the institutes long-term growth.
