The Shenyang Arboretum of Chinese Academy of Sciences is subordinated to the Institute of Applied Ecology, CAS. It was founded in 1955 by famous botanist Prof. Liu Shen-e and ecologist Prof. Wang Zhan. It’s lying by the side of the Nanyunhe park of Shenyang, covering an area of 5 ha. It is the one and only botanical garden of CAS in northeast China, and owns the unique regional floral feature. It has been engaged in collection, conservation and research of germplasm resources of plants in northeast China. More than 1000 plant species have been collected in the arboretum, about 600 species are grown on the open ground and over 300 species including a lot of cullivars of ornamental plants polled in green-house. After managing for 50 years, the arboretum has become a city forest community which took zonal vegetation as main feature and honored as a “small forest in metropolis”.
Based on the abundant plant diversity with rich scientific implications in botany and ecology, the arboretum has become one of the best sites for research, education and tourism. It has been awarded as the “Sci-tech Inovation Base of Nation’s youth’, ‘Pubic Scientific Education Base of Chinese youth’, ‘Scientific Public Education Bases of Liaoning Provinces’ and ‘’Public Scientific Education Base of Shenyang City’, and has become an instructive base for popular science in botany, dendrology, ecology and horliculture.
