Experimental Forests
There are about 1350 ha experimental forests consisting of various types of natural secondary forests, which were formed after intense disturbances on the original forests in 1950s. Major plantation forests include Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and larch (Larix spp.). The typical forest vegetation belongs to Changbai Mountain flora. The regional vegetation climax is the mixed broadleaved Korean pine forest.
Current Research Projects
1) National Natural Science Foundations: Gap regeneration process and mechanism in secondary forest ecosystems in Northeast China; N cycling in Forest ecosystem; Early natural regeneration in forming mixed forests after artificial induction of pure larch plantation forests; Regulation of dominant tree species in soil organic matter in secondary forest ecosystem; 2) National Key Research and Development Program of China: Technology and demonstration for the ecological protection and the development and utilization of biological resources in northeast forest area; Regional structure optimization and regulation based on the balance between timber production and ecological functions in plantation forests; 3) Other projects: LiDAR monitoring platforms of tower group in secondary forest ecosystem.
