From June 19th to 23th, 2018, the International Workshop on “Maintenance of the Healthy Ecosystem and Biodiversity Conservation”, co-organized by the Institute of Applied Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the CAS’s Key Laboratory of Forest Ecology and Management, was successfully held in Yanji City, Jilin Province.
Twenty-three experts from the United States, Russia, Mongolia, Japan, South Korea and other countries and eleven experts and graduate students from China participated in the Workshop. Dr. FANG Yunting, the deputy director of IAE, and Dr. LEE You Mi, the director of the National Arboretum of Korea (NAK), delivered speeches respectively and expressed warm welcome to the experts from different countries.
At the Workshop, Dr. W. Keith Moser, a forestry ecologist from the US Forest Service, gave a report entitled “Long-term Study on Biodiversity and Forest Stand Dynamics in the Northern Arizona,” detailing the research works and results on biodiversity and long-term forest dynamics in northern Arizona. Dr. Pavel Krestov from the Botanical Garden of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences gave a talk entitled "Electronic Herbarium as a Step towards Integration of Plant Systematics Researches in East Asia,” highlighting the significance of using Electronic Herbarium as a tool for plant systematic studies. Dr. Urgamal Magsar from the Institute of Experimental Biology, Mongolian Academy of Sciences gave a talk entitled “Current Red List Plants and the Rare and Vulnerable Plant Species of Mongolia”. Dr. SUNG Won Son from NAK gave a talk titled “Regional Cooperation on the Conservation of IUCN Red List of Threatened Plant Species in East Asia,” introducing their ideas for regional cooperation to protect the endangered plant species on the Red list. Prof. YE Qing from the South China Botanical Garden, CAS, gave a report titled “Long-term Observation in Forest Ecosystems,” illustrating the latest results from the long-term studies at the Dinghushan Forest Ecosystem Research Station. Prof. HAO Zhanqing from IAE gave a talk titled “Chinese Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Network (CForBio),” focusing on the introduction of forest biodiversity monitoring network of China and relevant studies and achievements of IAE.
During the Workshop, the experts at home and abroad visited the National Field Observation and Research Station of Jilin Changbai Mountain Forest. Prof. WANG Anzhi, the director of the Changbai Mountain Station, introduced the general state of the station, detailing its development history of more than 30 years, the long-term ecological researches carried out at the Station and its achievements.
Prof. WANG Xugao from IAE, at the site of his research group’s 25 ha large plot of temperate broad-leaved Korean pine forest in Changbai Mountain, demonstrated the roles of healthy ecosystems on biodiversity maintenace and exchanged ideas with experts at home and abroad on site. The researchers from different countries exchanged ideas about research methods and discussed the relationship between maintenance of healthy ecosystem and biodiversity conservation in light of the forest types in their own country, which laid a good foundation for further cooperative research in the future.
