On October 13, Prof. Sun Xiaomei, associate Prof. Chen Dongsheng, Dr. Wu Chunyan and others from the Forestry Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, together with Feng Jian, vice president of the Liaoning Academy of Forestry, visited Qingyuan Forest Ecosystem Observation and Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Qingyuan Station). The visit was accompanied by Yu Lizhong, deputy station director of Qingyuan Station, and some others at the station.

In the lecture hall of Qingyuan Station, Yu Lizhong briefly introduced the overview of IAE and its field research stations, and told the visitors in detail about the history, research contents and objectives, research progress, main achievements, and future development goals of Qingyuan station.

Yang Kai, a research scientist at the station, gave a talk on the "productivity decline mechanism and improvement strategy of Larch (Larix spp.) plantations." Associate Prof. Gao Tian, introduced the researches based on the LiDAR monitoring towers network platform located in the secondary forest ecosystem. Dr. Lu Deliang gave a talk on the "Structural Features of Forest Gap and Forest Regeneration and Succession." The academic exchange meeting was chaired by Zhang Jinxin.

Afterwards, Sun Xiaomei and others made a field trip to the LiDAR towers network platform, the experimental warming platform, and the secondary forest-larch plantation paired plots at Qingyuan Station. The visitors and hosts then conducted in-depth exchanges on the research plots, monitoring methods and indices, and scientific questions to be answered at Qingyuan Station. They also discussed soil fertility changes in larch plantations of different ages, the introduction of broad-leaved tree species, and the effect of different thinning intensities on larch plantation rehabilitation. The two sides also discussed other topics such as tree species classification using LiDAR, forest gap research, and forest management.

Sun Xiaomei said that Qingyuan Station developed rapidly and has made remarkable achievements in recent years. She spoke highly of the research plots, large-scale research/monitoring platforms and related researches that have been carried out at Qingyuan Station, and put forward many constructive comments on the future development of Qingyuan Station. She also hoped to carry out in-depth exchanges and cooperation with researchers at Qingyuan Station in the aspects of larch genetic breeding, highly efficient cultivation of plantations, and ecological processes of forest plantations, so as to provide technical support for the improvement of forest plantation productivity and function in the temperate zone of Northeast China.
