IAE Holds 2021 Applied Ecology Forum

Release Time:2021-07-22 Big Small

From July 1st to 2nd, 2021, the Science and Technology Division of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, organised the 2021 Applied Ecology Forum. Professor HE Hongshi from the University of Missouri in the United States and Prof. Zhang Yangjian from the Institute of Geographical Sciences & Natural Resources Research of CAS were invited to give talks. A total of more than 60 researchers and graduate students participated in the forum. Prof. Wang Xugao, head of the S&T Division of IAE, chaired the forum.

Professor HE Hongshi gave talk titled "Importance of Observational, Controlled, and Simulation Experiments in Ecological Research." Professor HE explained the importance of observation, control and simulation experiments in ecological research, mainly taking the study of Changbai Mountain as an example. He pointed out that the current ecology and geography are becoming more and more closely linked. "Ecology research is frequently spatialized, and geography research tends to be quantitative. The junction of these two disciplines will find out spatial solutions to problems of ecology and geography, and efforts to improve the ability to obtain spatial data will effectively meet the urgent need for data in future ecology and geography research," he said.

Subsequently, Prof. Zhang Yangjian gave a talk entitled "Alpine Ecosystems and Global Changes: Plots-Landscapes-Regions." By studying the impact of global changes in ecologically fragile areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Prof. Zhang found that the grassland ecosystems on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have higher carbon use efficiency than other similar ecosystems in the world. His research has improved the accuracy of the productivity model that used in alpine grassland ecosystems, verified that the vegetation system of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is highly sensitive to climate change, and highlighted that vegetation growth and snow cover on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have feedback effects on climate.

After the talks, the participants had in-depth exchanges and discussions with the speakers on

their research results and methodologies. The Applied Ecology Forum expands academic knowledge of participants and promotes the growth of young scientists.
