On September 28, 2021, Zhang Jiabao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and head of the expert team of the Black Soil & Granary Initiative, visited the R&D base of  the "Dry Land Soil Conservation and Production Capacity Improvement" Project in Changtu County, Tieling City, Liaoning Province, where a core demonstration area of the Black Soil & Granary Initiative is located. Zhang's visit was to inspect the work progress at the demonstration base. Zhu Jiaojun and Zhuo Junchen, director and deputy director of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Su Yang, deputy director and secretary of the Party Committee of the Northeast Institute of Geography & AgroEcology, CAS, Li Jingtao, secretary of the Political and Legal Committee of Changtu County, Yang Weiliang, deputy county mayor of Changtu County, as well as the researchers from the Agricultural Center of IAE accompanied the inspection.

Prof. He Hongbo, researcher of IAE and core member of the "Dry Land Soil Conservation and Production Capacity Improvement" Project, delivered a working report on behalf of the project team. She said that the conservative tillage model established by the project team can make full use of soil moisture and fertility during the cropping season and promote production efficiency of the soil, thus can better use and protect black soil resources and increase grain yields. By setting up a Changtu Model to popularise this efficient and environmentally friendly way of farming for dry land soil conservation, the development of modern agriculture in Liaoning will be greatly enhanced.

Zhang Jun, deputy director of the Modern Agriculture Service Center in Changtu County, Prof. Xie Hongtu of the project team, and associate Prof. Bao Xuelian showed soil profiles and crop fields to Zhang Jiabao and other visitors. The improvements in soil quality, soil function and corn yields made all visitors truly realise the importance of studying and popularising the tillage model for black soil conservation.

Academician Zhang Jiabao fully affirmed the work done by researchers of IAE in Changtu demonstration area. He pointed out that the research team is supposed to develop multiple modern agricultural models for black soil conservation and utilisation in order to achieve large-scale, green and intelligent agriculture. He encouraged the researchers to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the local government, and to provide strong support for China's agricultural modernisation and rural revitalisation in the new era.
