On May 26, the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences held a kick-off meeting for the Institute's major project "Precise Measurement and Functional Improvement of Carbon Sink in Terrestrial Ecosystems in Northeast China". The meeting focused on checking and improving the project implementation plan, and making overall project arrangements in the next three years.

At the beginning of the meeting, Wang Xugao made a report on the project implementation plan. He said that the project is set up to meet the national needs of "Carbon Neutrality" Strategy. Its main research involves the precise measurement of the temporal and spatial patterns of carbon sinks in typical ecosystems in Northeast China, the assessment of carbon sink functions and carbon sink potential, and the development of carbon sink enhancement technologies.

Afterwards, the participants had an in-depth discussion on the project implementation plan. Fang Yunting, deputy director of IAE, said that it is necessary to highlight the key scientific questions before implementing the project, and is important to strengthen the technology demonstration and promotion during the implementation of the project. Zhuo Junchen, deputy director of IAE, hoped that through the implementation of this major project, IAE will provide high-quality advice to the country’s government.

Zhu Jiaojun, director of IAE, pointed out that the carbon sink project is a major step for the institute to meet the national strategic needs of Carbon Neutrality. He said that the purpose of the project is to gather superior research forces, strive for original scientific research results, provide solutions for carbon capture and carbon sink increase in terrestrial ecosystems. He emphasized that it is necessary to carry out the project in combination with the existing research and pay more attention to core scientific issues such as forest soil carbon emission measurement, carbon sink increase mechanism and carbon-water balance mechanism of black soil, etc. He suggested that the team members of the project should accelerate the building of the carbon source/sink database of Northeast China, do a good job in the display, promotion and application of its research results, and contribute IAE's wisdom to reach the Carbon Neutrality goal of China.
