On December 17th, the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Qingyuan Forest Station and Symposium on Long-term Observation and Research of Temperate Forest Ecosystems was held in the form of online video conference. The Symposium was sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) and the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of CAS, and organized by Liaoning Qingyuan Forest Ecosystem National Field Scientific Observation and Research Station (i.e., Chinese Academy of Sciences Qingyuan Forest Ecosystem Observation and Research Station of CAS). A total of more than 180 people, including Academician CHEN Yiyu and Academician FU Bojie, Director and Deputy Director of CERN Scientific Committee, Academician Cao Fuliang, Academician Zhang Jiabao and Researcher Liu Shirong, deputy directors of Academic Committee of Qingyuan Forest Station, participated in the online video conference.

At the beginning, leaders and experts participating the symposium watched a video demonstrating Qingyuan Forest Station's history, people and current situation. Subsequently, Jin Changjie, Party Committee secretary of IAE, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of IAE, to which the Qingyuan Forest Station is affiliated.

ZHOU Dejin, director of the Internet Information Office and director of the Science Communication Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hao Yujun, director of the Science and Technology Department of the State Forestry and Grassland Administration, Wang Ruidan, deputy director of the National Science and Technology Infrastructure Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Zhang Junchang, CPC secretary of the Qingyuan Manchu Autonomous County, made speeches respectively, focusing on the National Field Observation Station Network Construction, the cooperation and information sharing of various departments and institutes, major strategic tasks, network observation and research, observation standards and norms, information technology used for field observation and research, open sharing of data, and technical service for local high-quality development.

Academician Fu Bojie presided over the Symposium. Yu Lizhong, deputy head of Qingyuan Forest Station, gave a talk entitled Two Decades of Development of Qingyuan Forest Station. Then, Zhu Jiaojun, director of IAE and head of Qingyuan Forest Station, made a report on long term observation and research of temperate forest ecosystems. Academician Chen Yiyu, Academician Cao Fuliang, Academician Zhang Jiabao and experts and leaders participating the symposium praised Qingyuan Forest Station's achievements in the past 20 years, and put forward earnest hopes and valuable suggestions for the future development of the long-term observation and research on temperate forest ecosystems.

"Long-term observation at field stations is crucial to revealing the natural succession pattern of forests, and nowadays it is an opportunity period for the development of Qingyuan Forest Station," Academician FU Bojie concluded. To maintain strong "vitality" and achieve greater achievements in the next 20 years, he suggested that long-term plans should be made in terms of building research team, deepening current research and expanding research field.

Finally, Zhu Jiaojun expressed his heartfelt thanks to the leaders and experts for their support to Qingyuan Forest Station over the past 20 years. He said that researchers at Qingyuan Forest Station would carefully learn from the experts' guidance and suggestions and further clarify the development goals and plans, and that the researchers would take this symposium as a new starting point, strive to build a comprehensive field observation and research platform with international academic influence to meet the national strategic needs for establishing sustainable forest vegetation barriers, to ensure national ecological security and food security, and to provide scientific and technological support and decision-making tips to achieve the goals of ecological civilization construction such as carbon neutrality and carbon peaking.
