From June 26 to 28, 2023, the Bureau of Science Communication (BSC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) invited journalists from 14 news media outlets at the central, provincial and ministerial levels to conduct symposiums, field visits and on-site interviews at the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of CAS. The journalists learned about the institute's scientific and technological innovation achievements and work progress in ecological civilization construction, focusing on the issues of ecological security barriers (Three-North Shelterbelts), sand control, forest carbon sinks, as well as the construction of information networks for field research stations.

On the afternoon of June 26, a symposium was held in the lecture hall of IAE Building 3. ZHU Weiwei, head of the News Liaison Office of BSC, Yang Ping, a researcher of the Biological Division of the Bureau of Science and Technology Promotion and Development of CAS, journalists from the news media outlets, as well as ZHUO Junchen, deputy director of IAE, WANG Xugao, head of the Science and Technology Division of IAE, ZONG Wenjun, head of the General Office of IAE, and heads and deputy heads of the three research centers of IAE attended the symposium, which was presided over by ZHU Weiwei. ZHU Weiwei extended a warm welcome to the media reporters and thanked them for their strong support in displaying the image of CAS and publicizing the achievements of CAS institutes. On behalf of IAE, ZHUO Junchen expressed his sincere gratitude to the leaders from CAS headquarters and friends who have supported the development of IAE for a long time. WANG Xugao introduced the basic situation of IAE and its innovation and development to the visitors. The heads and deputy heads of the three research centers of IAE introduced the main progress and expected results in forestry, agriculture, and environment fields, respectively. Afterward, the interview group communicated with the scientists of IAE on topics of interest.

The media journalists also visited IAE's Daqinggou Sandland Ecological Experiment Station and Qingyuan Forest Ecosystem National Field Observation and Research Station, respectively. ZHU Jiaojun, director of IAE, Researcher HAO Guangyou, head of Daqinggou Station, Senior Engineer YU Lizhong, deputy head of Qingyuan Station, and other scientific researchers from the two field stations were interviewed by the journalists.

The communication between IAE and the news media helps to tell the story of IAE scientists and may enhance the social and public influence of the Institute.
