The Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences hosted a visit from LIU Xuhui, the Deputy Mayor of Shenyang, and other officials from the Shenyang Municipal People’s Government on June 21. The visit aimed to strengthen the cooperation between the city and the institute on ecological issues and projects.

LIU Xuhui and his delegation met with ZHU Jiaojun, the director of IAE, and other researchers and staff members. They discussed the progress and challenges of the institute’s work on desertification prevention and control, black soil conservation and utilization, and the construction of the Shenyang National Botanical Garden.

ZHU Jiaojun briefed the visitors on the history and achievements of IAE, which was established in Shenyang in the early 1950s. He said that IAE has been supported by the city government for a long time, and has participated in many national and regional ecological projects, such as the Three-North Project, which aims to create a green barrier in northern China.

LIU Xuhui praised IAE for its contribution to the resources and environmental protection field, and its role as a scientific and technological innovation base and talent hub. He expressed his hope that IAE would continue to apply its expertise and research to help Shenyang protect its important grain production areas and build ecological security barriers. He also said that IAE should show more responsibility in the revitalization of Northeast China.

After the meeting, LIU Xuhui and his delegation visited the Northeast Biological Herbarium, where they learned more about the biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region.
