Scientists Explore Ways to Enhance Carbon Sequestration in Agriculture

Release Time:2023-07-25 Big Small

A team of scientists from the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited the Baotou Institute of Agriculture and Animal-husbandry Sciences (BIAAS) on June 19-20, 2023, to exchange ideas on how to enhance carbon sequestration in agriculture.

The IAE researchers (GONG Zongqiang and ZHANG Xiaorong) shared their latest findings on using selenium-enriched compound fertilizers in saline-alkali soils and applying industrial carbon dioxide to facility agriculture. They reported that these methods could improve crop and vegetable yield and quality, as well as increase plant carbon uptake and reduce soil carbon emission.

The director of BIAAS, WANG Liangming, welcomed the visitors and briefed them on the institute’s research achievements and goals. He said that Baotou City was developing a Forest and Grassland Carbon Sequestration Experimental Area to support the national strategy of achieving carbon neutrality and peaking. He expressed his hope for more collaboration with IAE in the field of agricultural carbon sequestration and to visit IAE at a suitable time.

The visit strengthened the ties between the two institutes and opened up new opportunities for future cooperation.
