A team of researchers from the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by Dr. WANG Zhengwen, recently visited Mongolia to promote academic exchange and collaboration in ecological restoration. The visit, which took place from May 29 to June 2, 2024, included participation in the International Conference on Plant Science hosted by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences' Botanic Garden and Research Institute.

During the conference, WANG Zhengwen and one of his doctoral student presented their research on soil restoration and drought adaptation mechanisms in grasslands. Their presentations sparked discussions with Mongolian experts, highlighting the significance of international cooperation in ecological research.

Dr. WANG Zhengwen also held strategic talks with Tuvshintogtokh Indree and Baatarbileg Nachin, the director of the Botanic Garden and Research Institute and the vice-chancellor of the National University of Mongolia. The discussions focused on potential future collaborations in studying grasslands and forests, restoring degraded lands, and exchanging scientific talent.

A significant outcome of the visit is the planned return visit of two Mongolian scientists to finalize a formal cooperation agreement with IAE in August 2024. This agreement will mark the beginning of a deeper scientific partnership between China and Mongolia.

In an interview with Mongolian media, WANG Zhengwen expressed optimism about the future of Sino-Mongolian cooperation and the potential for joint research initiatives. This visit and conference participation lay the groundwork for IAE to expand its research collaborations with Mongolia and other Northeast Asian neighbors, aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative framework.
