In an academic event on July 2, 2024, Dr. FAN Yuanchao, Assistant Professor at Tsinghua University Shenzhen International Graduate School, delivered a compelling lecture on the “Coupling Processes of Carbon, Water, and Energy in the Ecological Climate System” at the Forest Ecology and Conservation Key Laboratory of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Invited by the lab’s head, Researcher Yang Jian, Dr. FAN, who has made notable contributions in bioclimatology, ecosystem and Earth system modeling, and the assessment of extreme climate events, shared his latest research findings. The lecture was attended by over 60 participants, including prominent researchers such as Academician ZHU Jiaojun, IAE's Deputy Director Fang Yunting, and other senior and junior researchers and graduate students.

Dr. FAN’s presentation covered the mechanisms of climate change, energy and material transformation processes in the Earth spheres, emphasizing the importance of energy-water-carbon coupling as a theoretical framework for studying ecological climate systems and climate change. He highlighted the critical role of water-heat exchange in sustaining life and stressed that climate mitigation strategies should consider energy balance alongside carbon.

The lecture sparked significant interest among attendees, leading to an engaging discussion on topics such as geoengineering, photovoltaic power generation, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and afforestation space assessment. The event provided new insights and methodologies for future research at the lab, fostering a vibrant academic atmosphere.
