Institute of Applied Ecology Celebrates 70 Years of Innovation and Progress
The Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) celebrated its 70th anniversary on October 25, 2024, with over 400 guests, including staff, alumni, government officials, and international partners. The event, held at the institute’s headquarters in Shenyang, highlighted the institute’s contributions to ecological research and its future directions in applied ecology.
Opening Ceremony and Recognition of Achievements
The ceremony began with a keynote address from IAE Party Secretary JIN Changjie, who read a congratulatory message from CAS Vice President WANG Keqiang, recognizing IAE’s achievements and encouraging its continued commitment to scientific innovation. Shenyang Vice Mayor LI Gang praised the institute’s support for regional environmental initiatives and emphasized the city’s ongoing collaboration with IAE to advance regional development in Northeast China.
Highlights of Past and Future Collaborations
The event featured remarks from Chinese and international academics, including CAS Academician LIU Congqiang and Ewald Schnug, Honorary Chairman of the International Fertilizer Science Center. Speakers underscored the institute’s role in developing ecological solutions and anticipated deeper collaborations with global institutions. Former director of IAE SHEN Shanmin spoke on behalf of retired staff, sharing his pride in IAE’s legacy, while staff and student representatives reaffirmed their commitment to IAE’s mission.

IAE Director ZHU Jiaojun reviewed the institute’s 70-year journey, emphasizing its leading role in ecological research and innovation. He outlined an ambitious plan focused on ecological conservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental health, asserting that IAE will continue advancing ecological science to meet China’s sustainability goals.
Awards and New History Exhibition Hall Inauguration
An awards ceremony honored outstanding contributors to IAE’s success, followed by the unveiling of a new history exhibition hall dedicated to the institute’s achievements.

The celebration concluded with a symposium titled “Achievements, Challenges, and Prospects in Applied Ecology,” featuring CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) academicians who presented research on topics including global climate change and soil biodiversity. This academic exchange underscored IAE’s dedication to addressing global ecological challenges and supporting China’s commitment to ecological civilization.
