Since the 1950s the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) successively took the lead in some major natural resources surveys in northeast China, including the Sanjiang Plain Wasteland Survey, the Sino-Soviet Natural Resources Comprehensive Survey in Heilongjiang River Watershed Areas, and the Soil Resource Inventory in northeast China. IAE scientists denominated the scientific name of "Black Soil" for the first time, and published the book "The Soil of Northeast China," the first monograph presenting overview of soil resources in northeast China which influenced the development of soil science in China.

Carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems is the most economically feasible and environmentally friendly way to mitigate elevated CO2 concentrations and to enhance carbon sink potential in nature.

On the morning of December 30, 2021, the third meeting of the first council of the Green Fertilizer Engineering Laboratory (GFEL) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the third meeting of the academic committee of GFEL were held in Shenyang. Wang Xugao, Head of the Science and Technology Division of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), CAS, presided at the meeting.

On January 8, 2022, the leading group meeting of the "Black Soil Conservation and Utilization Technology Innovation Program" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a Class A Strategic Priority Research Program of CAS, was held in Beijing.

On January 11, 2022, Liaoning Ecological Society (LES) organized its 2021 Annual Conference and a Symposium on the Role of Ecology in Achieving Carbon Emission Peaking and Carbon Neutrality. The conference was held at the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Shenyang in Offline and Live Streaming mode. Pan Jin, Head of the Society Division at LES, attended the meeting.

On December 31, the 2021 Academic Committee Meeting of the Liaoning Key Laboratory of Stable Isotope Technology (LKLSIT) was held in the lecture hall at Huishan campus of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The meeting was held in offline and live streaming mode, and was presided by Jing Hongshuang.

On December 23, 2021, the Pollution Ecology and Environmental Engineering Research Center of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences held a symposium to discuss the center's strategic development in the 14th Five-Year period. More than 30 people including director Zhu Jiaojun, deputy director Zhuo Junchen, heads of administrative divisions of the institute and researchers from different research groups of the center attended the symposium which was presided over by researcher Gong Zongqiang, deputy head of the environmental research center.

On December 6, 2021, the 29th annual conference of the International Scientific Centre of Fertilizers (Centre International des Engrais Chimiques, CIEC), themed as "Challenges of food production and fertilization in a VIRTUAL world," was held in Shenyang in offline and live streaming mode.

On the morning of December 2, 2021, Zhang Hongxiang, deputy director of the Science and Technology Promotion and Development Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), along with the department heads of the bureau, held a video meeting with administrative and research representatives of the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), CAS.

On November 16, An Jinxiang, deputy director of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Science and Technology, visited the Institute of Applied Ecology (IAE), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and attended a symposium held at the institute. Ma Yuehong, deputy dean of the Shenyang Branch of the CAS, Zhu Jiaojun, director of IAE, Zhuo Junchen, deputy director of IAE, and some IAE researchers attended the symposium. The symposium was presided over by Wang Xugao, head of Science and Technology Division of IAE.
