Qingyuan Forest CERN was founded in 2003 by Institute of Applied Ecology, CAS/QY County.

Objectives

Our mission is to understand the ways that secondary forests respond and adapt to the disturbances coming from both climate extremes and human activities; to make clear the regeneration/restoration processes of dominant tree species in the secondary forest ecosystem; to compare the processes of soil carbon and nutrient transformation and cycling between secondary forests and plantation forests; and to provide the information to forestry institutions for sustainable forest ecosystem management.

Experimental Forests

There are about 1350 ha experimental forests consisting of various types of natural secondary forests, which were formed after intense disturbances on the original forests in 1950s. Major plantation forests include Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and larch (Larix spp.). The typical forest vegetation belongs to Changbai Mountain flora. The regional vegetation climax is the mixed broadleaved Korean pine forest.
